Human Trafficking:

Human trafficking is the global illegal transportation of people across international borders for exploitation as laborers or in the sex trade.

  • It is estimated that there are 27 million people in the world today who are enslaved.
  • Every year 600,000 to 800,000 persons are trafficked across international borders. (US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report, 2006)
  • Some estimates have as many as 1.2 million children being trafficked every year. (United Nations Children’s Fund, 2007)
  • Human trafficking and exploitation plague all nations and no country is immune. (US Department of State, 2008)
  • Since 1998, the United States based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has handled more than 300,000 reports of all types of child sexual exploitation including child pornography, child molestation, child prostitution, online enticement of children, child sex tourism, obscene material sent to a child and the federally mandated reports of child pornography from Internet Service Providers.

Push and Pull Factors

Emigration had a profound influence on modern-day slavery.

Push and pull factors are those factors which either forcefully push people into migration or attract them. A push factor is forceful, and a factor which relates to the country from which a person migrates. It is generally some problem which results in people wanting to migrate. Different types of push factors can be seen further below. A push factor is a flaw or distress that drives a person away from a certain place. A pull factor is something concerning the country to which a person migrates. It is generally a benefit that attracts people to a certain place. Push and pull factors are usually considered as north and south poles on a magnet.

In general we can divide factors causing migrations into two groups of factors: Push and pull factors. In general:

  • Push Factors are economic, political, cultural, and environmentally based.
  • Pull Factors are economic, political, cultural, and environmentally based.
